Prof.
Dr. S.M. Aqil Burney
Project
Director Umear Basha Institute of Information Technology (UBIT) of
Karachi University
|
Dated: 26 March,
2003
|
|
Prof.
Dr. S.M. Aqil Burney has 30 years of vast experience of teaching in
different local universities and the universities abroad. He is
currently the Project Director of Uplift Project, Dept of Computer
Science, University of Karachi (MoST) and Umear Basha Institute of
Information Technology (UBIT) of Karachi University.
Explaining about the mushroom growth of IT institutes in our country
which have compromised to a great deal on the quality of education
and are just minting money he said that by giving an example that
when it rains, a lot of weeds also grow with the other plants. The
plants obviously survive but the weeds die their own death. Likewise
when people reject these institutes which compromise on quality,
they will fade away and no one will even remember them.
Moreover he added that the youth are conscious about their future.
If the registration in IT is slow, it means IT is not getting
business like India. To call it a misconception among youth is not
right. I think students are still taking interest in IT and IT has a
bright future in Pakistan. Now every profession is bound to use IT
to survive. So one cannot deny the importance of IT these days. IT
is not going to end its horizon but the issue is; are we ready to
make use of IT from business point of view?
He insisted that some very important question and various issues
need to be discussed with it. For instance Social structure,
Education level, Market places and how people do business is
important. He said if we talk about the big cities like Karachi,
Lahore & Islamabad, E-Commerce is already being used. ATMs
and interbank processing are under usage these days. Kalia Groups
project MallPk.com is also a positive step towards E-Commerce
implementation in Pakistan. There is a future but society has to
adopt it with open hands.
Commenting on the work done by Kalia Group to endorse the field of
IT in the country he stated that he was very much inspired by the
zeal of Mr. Hanif S. Kalia. If such software houses like this (KalSoft)
start developing which have their own search engines & Knowledge
bases, we can prosper.
Actually we are consuming more IT than creating IT. When we are
consumer, other countries will get benefit of it but when we are
creative, we can get benefit out of it completely. I am very much
satisfied with Kalia Groups effort in creating IT culture in
Pakistan.

he said that these projects show that there is remarkable potential

Further more he accentuated the fact that like every other core
